We ae a palliative Care program which involves a dedicated nurse who visits patients in their homes providing emotional and spiritual support as well as medication. We currently support her with a small stipend to cover costs of transportation at night and medications.
For the past several years Alice Ramirez has been the sole provider of palliative care and hospice in the community.
She is very dedicated and continues to visit patients at all hours of night. For several years she did this on a voluntary basis but recently she has accepted a small stipend. We would like to establish a palliative program in the hospital which will require educating the doctors which we have started as well as setting aside two rooms for palliative care patients. We are hoping that the government will acknowledge the importance of oral morphine which is still not available in Nicaragua but apparently some progress is being made.
